I am Jonny

I am Jonny. If you’ve been curious enough to click this page, then here’s a little bit more about me in detail.

Professional life CV headlines:

  • Served in the UK Armed Forces for 22 years combined service, in both the infantry and the Intelligence Corps’. Operational tours of Northern Ireland and Afghanistan, and postings to the Defence School of Intelligence as a senior instructor. Medically discharged in 2024 from the Army Reserves.

  • Worked for a decade in politics. From local councillors to Secretaries of State, I have run the campaigns of some of the best known names in UK politics. Expert at election law, campaigns and community engagement.

  • 3rd sector experience with a specialism in Veterans’ Affairs. Have worked in senior roles for The Officers’ Association and the Forces Employment Charity, as well as a project managed the cross-industry campaign ‘Veterans Work’ at Deloitte. Leadership experience includes Managing Director role at Mission Community, a brand of Mission Motorsport, and am the co-founder of the UK Afghanistan Veterans Community, a service charity that I have helped build from scratch.

Top 3 things I speak about with authenticity:

  1. Mental health and mental fitness. Through a lived experience of PTSD, anxiety and depression, I have come out of the other side and use this to inspire others and give hope, focussing on post-traumatic growth. I have also changed UK government policy for access to treatment along the way. My recovery journey took me to the Invictus Games where I medalled and held a leadership role, and I am an Ambassador for Invictus Birmingham 2027. I am a current athlete for the UK Armed Forces Para Snowsports Team where I was awarded top disabled athlete at the Combined Services Championships in 2024.

  2. Afghanistan. I am just one of dozens on non-native speakers of Pashto in the UK, one of the two main languages of the warn-torn country. I dodged IEDs, worked with tribal communities and trained the Afghan National Police. I became an expert in their culture. Today I am one of the co-founders of the community that represents the 150,000 UK Afghanistan Veterans Community and uphold the memory of our 457 fallen Service persons. I have a lot of experiences that we can learn from to avoid mistakes in the future that are transferable in industry.

  3. UK politics. From serving at the grassroots to working with high-profile individuals, I have a story to tell from behind the scenes. I also host podcast ‘Veterans In Politics’ interviewing 90+ politicians from around the globe, and am regularly asked to commentate on the subject in the media. I love to share with partners what I learnt as a participant in some of the most high pressured political years in living memory.
